BACK TO ARTWORK Artist's Statement Natural glass has existed since the beginning of time. The earliest man-made objects are thought to date back to around 3500 BC. It was very much later around the end of the first century BC that a new method, glass blowing, would revolutionize glass production. Throughout the centuries craftspeople and artists have endeavored to create objects of glass to enrich and beautify the world around them. This is my time to relay the thoughts of the day and feeling of the moment into my favorite material. This is my time to feel at peace, to lay down my frustration and meditate in this amazing process. The goal is to focus all of my being into a rare thing of beauty. This is where I live. This is my time. As I work, I remind myself to enjoy every step. In these moments as the glass moves and evolves I pay close attention. I pay attention to how the glass is responding to my actions and my mood, in turn I respond to the glass while respecting its ability to lead. It is this relationship that brings out my personality in the glass. I’m not looking for perfection; I’m looking for that moment of agreement. That instant when the glass seems satisfied and I feel I have done my best. Its hard explain, but at this moment, I see the glass shine. As with all art, the job is not complete until the audience is involved. People respond in many ways. People have said to me that a piece of my work make them happy or reminds them of a place or time, or I am told about someone they know or knew and how they would love it. I have heard many say that a piece of art makes them feel a certain way, but I believe the opposite is true,. I believe that they already have that feeling inside them and that the object they admire simply allows them to recognize it. So, I have made it my life’s work to grab people’s attention through the natural beauty of glass; to make them stop. This is their time. If I can give only one thing to the world it is to give people a reason to pause, if only for a moment, and experience their own beautiful thoughts and their own beautiful feeling. Artist's Bio Steven Webber always knew he would be an artist. However, it wasn’t until 1991 that his true passion of working with hot glass was discovered. A decade of hard work, intense training and determination has given rise to this unique and notable artist. Steven has created innovative combinations of form and color that meld classic style with contemporary flair. Flourishing as a creative force in his community Steven found himself working in private studios around the area and felt that finding a place to work was becoming more of a task than developing the work itself. Chicago’s art community was served for a new avenue for glass workers. In an effort to supply himself with a studio and to inspire a new generation of glass blowers, Steven founded Chicago Hot Glass Inc. He and four other glass enthusiasts built and opened Chicago’s first and only public access glass blowing studio. Steven now spends his time creating highly refined works of art, nurturing relationships with his clients and collectors and mentoring his students.
