BACK TO ARTWORK Artist's Biography Gilles Payette graduated from the famous Saint-Jean-Port-joli Sculpture School in 1973 in Québec, and after several years teaching wood sculpture, he continued his research molding metals, bronze and aluminum for sculptures. Later, having used glass in certain pieces Gilles interest in this medium grew and he started molding glass. With the grants Gilles received, he was able to continue and deepen his exploration in Montréal, New York and Seattle, under Francois Houdé, Bertil Vallien, Gene Koss and Hank Murta Adams, respectively. Gilles has continued experimenting with his technique to produce glass sculptures associated with other material such as wood, bronze and stone. He started his own studio in 1995 in Drummondville, about 35 miles south of Montréal. Casting glass in sand molds, for doing large sculptural pieces is the way to experiment and create within Gilles' soul, like the musician with his instruments, Gilles plays with the sand to create a mold were the glass can take place and be able to give concrete expression of his mind. The final touch is done at the end, when he puts the piece on a steel base, or wood post or on the wall. Gilles tries to give through the glass the impression of lightness, sacred, and witty. To Gilles, glass has a vital place in his work, it is so fragile, so dense, so transparent, no other matter can be like glass is, that's why he likes it. Whether through the form or the material, nature is an aesthetic constant in Gilles' vocabulary
